A cracking new release for Tom Puyabert. While the majority of entry-level wines from this region today are based on Tempranillo—a variety both easier and more profitable to grow—here Garnacha represents 60% of the blend. This Garnacha hails from the sandy, river stone terroir of El Agudo—a 60-year-old plot at Alfaro on the Monte Yerga (Rioja Baja). The Tempranillo is drawn from a selection of mature vines in Ábalos (Rioja Alta), and there is also some Ábalos Graciano, adding freshness and finesse. Puyabert fermented the wine in a combination of concrete and steel tank, then aged it for six months in concrete and 5,000-litre oak vats. The result is simply a must-try bargain.
Barrel & Batch Team Notes: Blue fruit and red currant with a light saline note on the nose delivering powerful driven red and blue fruits on the palate with a lovely savoury spice reminisant of salty liquorice. This rounds out with a very fine but persistent tannin giving this a lovely long finish with a touch cedar oak.
